Assistant Professor in graphic design – University of Hawai‘i at Manoa

The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa is conducting a search for an Assistant Professor, tenure track, in graphic design. Specifically, we are seeking applications from candidates who possess an understanding of the critical, historical and theoretical aspects of graphic design as well as an awareness of the ways in which traditional approaches to the discipline are evolving. The ideal candidate will be able to apply this understanding to UI/UX areas, including motion graphics, interaction design, experience design, data visualisation, mobile and/or other emergent technologies for designers.

The position is unique in that the selected candidate will have an active role in shaping the future of the Design Area at the University of Hawai‘i and its relationship to the Department, the larger University, and the local/global design community. The candidate will also be able to develop their own research and practice within the context of a large, extremely diverse urban area that is situated not only within the unequalled physical beauty of the Hawaiian islands, but in a singular position between the United States and Asia.

The Department of Art and Art History is a comprehensive and diverse center in the Asia/Pacific region for the study of visual art and art history. Its larger goal is to cultivate critically, technically and historically informed scholars, practitioners and audiences of the visual arts and design. Comprising nine distinct media areas plus art history, the department combines seasoned faculty expertise with state-of-the-art facilities. We are the second largest department on campus, with over 300 undergraduate majors, housed in our own building. Our Art History area is unique in the US for its Asia-Pacific focus. Our studio curriculum encompasses traditional media such as engraving and glass blowing, as well as contemporary technologies such as sound mixing, digital imaging, and interactive media. Our graphic design area has been featured in Print and How Magazine. It has won student and professional awards from the AIGA, the Type Directors Club, the Art Directors Club, Adobe and the Society of Experiential Design.

The University of Hawaiʻi Art Gallery is an internationally recognised exhibition venue with a history of both contemporary and historical exhibitions. A centerpiece of the Manoa campus, it consistently draws an annual attendance of nearly 25,000 visitors. Our visiting artist and scholar program is connected to the Gallery.  Past visiting artists, designers and scholars include: Elizabeth Diller and Ric Scofidio, Mel Chin, Ann Hamilton, Mona Hatoum, Gary Hill, Lucy Lippard, Wu Hung, Linda Nochlin, Pepon Osorio, Paul Pfeiffer, Lowrey Stokes Sims, Irma Boom, Harrell Fletcher, Michael Sorkin and Xu Bing. The department also collaborates with institutions in the larger Honolulu community, including the Honolulu Museum of Arts and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art at Shangri-la.
