The journey of Bina Nusantara University began on October 21, 1974. It originated from a short-term course named Modern Computer Course, which then expanded because of its strong foundation and comprehensive vision. In 1981, the course had developed into Computer Technical Academy with Informatics Management as the first major and changed into AMIK Jakarta that later became AMIK Bina Nusantara. AMIK Bina Nusantara recorded a remarkable achievement in its relatively young age when it was chosen as the best Computer Academy by The Ministry of Education and Culture on 1986. The need for professional workers in the Information Technology area drove AMIK further into development, and on the same year officially listed as Institute of Information Management and Computer Science Bina Nusantara. In 1993 the Institute opened the first Masters Program in Information System Management in Indonesia. After going through years of perseverance and hard work, Universitas Bina Nusantara (Bina Nusantara University or Binus University) was officially established on August 8, 1996, and today consist of the following School and Faculty: School of Computer Science, School of Information System, School of Business Management, School of Design, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Economics and Communication, Graduate Program, and International Program. Visual Communication Design Program, previously known as Graphic Design, was established on October 1998, under the faculty of Engineering. In September 2011 School of Design has officially established. It offers undergraduate study programs for whoever interested in design and to challenging competition as professional designers in global creative industry. The study programs in School of Design are Visual Communication Design with concentration field in New Media Design, Animation, Creative Advertising, and Interior Design with two concentration fields; Commercial and Hospitality Design, and Furniture and Interior Accessories. In Visual Communication Design program, the students learn how to integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge in art and design to meet industry standards and provide them with the principal know-how of creative visual communication; it's historical and cultural significance, and its core technology that establish a solid ground for well-informed practice or further study. In order to providing international experience, Binus University facilitates students with various activities such as student exchange or study abroad program with numerous university partners and internship program in global companies. School of Design also regularly stages an annual exhibition event called Fresh n Brite. Displaying the best artwork from the final years students, this event becomes a medium between graduates and industries. For the achievements, in 2014 the institution was awarded as The Best Indonesia Visual Communication Design school in its national accreditation category, as well as students achievements who have won in both national and international competitions such as ASEAN Skill Competition in 2010, 2012, and 2014, Indonesia Graphic Design Awards 2010, Screening at Europe on Screen Festival 2010, and many more on the last fifteen years.

The Indonesia Graphic Designers Association (ADGI) is a member-based organization of professionals in the field of graphic design. Our main task is to protect, serve and advance the profession, careers and the businesses of its members. - Protect One of ADGI's role in terms of protecting graphic designer is to realise and promote professional certification nationwide that will fulllfil international work standards. -Serve: By promoting the potential of professional human resources in the field of graphic design through one of Adgi's business unit program "Adgi Hub" with the intention of becoming a connecting bridge between Adgi's certified members with government bodies. As a nation with more than 250 million population, the growth of designers has gone exponentially large, more and more the government role is significant to the development of design. Currently, the government understanding of how design matters are still in its early stages. - Advance Improving the solidarity of Indonesian graphic designer by developing chapters nationwide. To this day, Adgi has 7 chapters all over Indonesia including Jakarta, Bandung, Bali, Jogjakarta, Surabaya, Solo and Malang.

The Jakarta Institute of The Arts (IKJ) - Faculty of Arts and Design is one of three faculty under Jakarta Institute of The Arts, a private higher education Institution of Arts facilitated and subsidized by Jakarta Special Region City Government. As one of the oldest faculty when Jakarta Institute of The Arts founded in 1970, Faculty of Arts and Design nowadays consist of five program: Visual Communication Design Program with three majoring: Graphic Design, Illustration and Multimedia; Interior Design Program; Product Design Program majoring in Fashion Design; Fine Arts Program and Craft Program. Listed as one of the 50 most prominent under graduate programs of year 2008 by the Indonesia Directorate General of Higher Education, Faculty of Arts and Design currently reside in three connected building from A to C and one art gallery, serving 400 students ranging from year one to the final year studies and graduating about 100 bachelor holder each year. In term of cooperation Faculty of Arts and Design support and implementing IKJ policy with International agencies and other Art education institution in past and present such as: The Royal Netherland-Erasmus Huis, Centre Culturel Français (CCF), Academy of Fine Arts in Prague Czech Republic, Goethe Institute Germany, California Institute of The Arts (CalArts) USA, Islamic Republic of Iran, JENESYS Program Japan, Korea Cultural Centre, etc.

Tarumanagara University (founded in 1959) is one among the big private universities in Jakarta. Indonesia. Besides Faculty of Visual Arts and Design, managara University has also seven other faculties, namely (1)Technical Enginering, (2) Economics and Business Management, (3) Medical, (4) Law, (5) Communication, (6) Information Technology, and (7) Psychology. The Faculty of Visual Arts and Design,Tarumanagara University, consists of two departments, namely (1) Visual Communication Design, and (2) Interior Design. UMN was established on 25 November 2005 based on the National Education Ministerial Decree No. 169/D/O/2005. Its operation is officially managed by Multimedia Nusantara Foundation. This foundation was established by Kompas Gramedia, a reputable business group engaged in mass media, publishing, printing, bookstores, hotels and education services. UMN is an institution of higher education with information and communication technology as its basis in the learning process in each subject it delivers. The professional lecturers in education and the directed and integrated programs will bring UMN to be an outstanding university at both national and international levels. Until the mid of 2015, Visual Communications Design Study Program divided into four (4) concentration/ majors. They are Graphic Design, Animation, Digital Cinematography, and Interactive Media Design. However, in the late of 2015, Film & Television Study Program was establised and it has 2 majors, which are Film and Animation. Consequently, in 2016, Visual Communication Design Study Program has only 2 majors, which are Graphic Design and Interactive Media Design.
