Monreal (Canada) - On January 16 and 17, 2005, the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) and the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) gave shape to the International Design Alliance (IDA). Its mission is to foster worldwide multidisciplinary exchange and cooperation, to raise the standards of professional practice, discourse and advocacy, and to promote greater understanding of the role design plays in society, commerce, sustainable development and the economic development of the world. The IDA acts as a collective, objective and non-partisan voice for professional design, embracing intellectual, cultural and developmental diversity.

Mervyn Kurlansky, Icograda President, stated: I believe the establishment of the IDA to be the most significant development in the history of Icograda and Icsid. This partnership between the two organisations is designed to bring about the much-needed unity between the various disciplines within the field of design whilst maintaining the richness of diversity. The IDA is still in its infancy and it will need all the nurturing, encouragement and support it can get to reach its full potential as the representative body for design as well as a force for good in the world.

The International Design Alliance took a historic step in appointing Eleni Stavridou, C.Q., as its very first Honorary Chair. The challenges that lie ahead are daunting yet exciting. It is surely a historical development in design profession management. I am looking forward to the challenges with humility and excitement and I promise not just to meet, but to surpass the objectives expected of me. I would very much like to thank both the international and the Montreal design communities for offering me this challenging and rewarding opportunity, reported Eleni Stavridou.

Mrs. Stavridou brings with her considerable experience that will undoubtedly serve the Alliance well. She has degrees in economics, banking and accounting and an MBA in Strategic Planning and Marketing. Early in her career, she moved from banking to the Canadian federal government where she soon held management and then senior executive positions. In 1985, while directing the Secretariat for the Development of the Montreal Region and the Secretariat of the Ministerial and Private Sector Committees responsible for defining the strategy to reinstate Montreal as an economically vibrant international centre, she was instrumental in identifying design as one of the major drivers of economic development in Quebec, within the current global context. A tireless proponent of design, she and two other founding members were the impetus for the establishment of the Institute of Design Montr al (IDM), which was officially inaugurated in 1993 and where she has remained its energetic, informed and visionary Executive Director ever since. Under her tutelage, the Institute of Design Montr al has become a world-class centre for design. In 2003, she was inducted by the government of Quebec as Chevalier (Knight) of the National Order of Qu bec for her valuable contributions to Quebec society. In addition to her duties as Executive Director of the Institute of Design Montr al, Eleni Stavridou will now provide the IDA dynamic leadership for developing its future activities.

We are most fortunate that the IDA is under the stewardship of Eleni Stavridou, its first Honorary Chair, who I am confident will help the IDA to achieve its objectives and more, said Mervyn Kurlansky, Icograda President. Mme. Stavridou has long been an advocate and promoter of design to both government and industry on the Canadian scene. We look forward to a valuable contribution on her part in assisting Icograda and Icsid on the ground in Montreal in developing and launching our new International Design Alliance. concluded Luigi Ferrara, Icsid President.
