wREGA hosts inaugural national design event KREATE 2011
Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) - The Graphic Design Association of Malaysia (wREGA) celebrated World Graphics Day 2011 with a series of design activities entitled 'KREATE 2011' on 6-7 May 2011. Working in collaboration with higher design learning institutions in Malaysia, this inaugural national design event was co-organised and hosted by the School of Design, KBU International College in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya. The two-day event, themed 'Design of tomorrow: How design can change the world,' consisted of various design challenges and creative activities.
KREATE 2011 was jointly officiated by KBU Chief Executive, YBhg Prof Dato' (Dr) Teo Chiang Liang and accompanied by Michael Goh, president of wREGA.
Working together with a private institution for the first time, wREGA sought to be a catalyst for creativity in the academic circles by promoting interaction among students/lecturers/designers and providing a venue for students to share their creativity. It was also a way for wREGA to contribute to graphic design education development in Malaysia. Drawing key industry players, wREGA aimed to help the students and young designers, the next generation of design leaders, to achieve international standing. According to Arthur Liaw, deputy head of KBU Design School, "Participants who participated in the challenges were assessed by judges from wREGA, as well as key industry players, has given the students valuable exposure, due to their strong link with this creative industry." Tan Sin Ai, head of KBU Design School, was thrilled with the tremendous response adding Kreate 2011 allowed the students to expand their network and also learned from industry experts."
The highlights of this event were a graphic design challenge, short movie challenge, instant photography challenge, a race and a stage performance. About 200 attendees, both academic from nine design learning institutions and professionals from the design community, participated in this event. It was very well received by the participants and the team-spirits, sportsmanship and energy was very high on that day. There were also display booths by industry partners to inform and educate the students about the latest products and technology in the market. The students were given the opportunity to try out the latest tools of the trade and viewed demonstrations by the specialists.
