    Hawthorn (Australia) - Swinburne University has appointed Dean of Design, Professor Ken Friedman, a University Distinguished Professor. Professor Friedman was recognised for his extensive contribution to design research and education, both internationally and at Swinburne.

    Lahti (Finland) - A new record was made in the number of entries offered for the Lahti 2011 Poster Biennial. As many as 6 958 posters (compared with approximately 2 600 in 2009) from 50 countries (49 in 2009) were submitted for the exhibition.

    Brighton (United Kingdom) - The Design Archives at the University of Brighton hold the archives of three major design organisations - the Design Council, the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) and the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid).

    New York (United States) - The School of Visual Art's Steven Heller is among the recipients of the 12 Annual National Design Awards announced today by the Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum. Heller is being recognised as the 2011 Design Mind for having affected a shift in design thinking or practice through writing, research and scholarship.

    Paris (France) - For their 2011 edition 'the right to education,' poster for tomorrow has organised the 'pan Africa workshops' series to give young African design and art students the chance to work with leading graphic designers. In support of their efforts to organise even more workshops, they've released a video from their workshop at École supérieur des arts visuels Marrakech (Morocco).

    Vilnius (Lithuania) - Celebrating their fifth year, the European Design (ED) Awards ceremony took place at the close of Spring: Icograda Design Week in Vilnius, Lithuania. Entries were divided into eight categories: special prizes, identity, publication, digital, packaging, illustration, self-promotion and various. Judges awarded 68 bronze, 60 silver and 32 gold medals.

    Montreal (Canada) - At the latest board meeting in Vilnius (Lithuania), the Icograda Executive Board approved the applications of seven new members. One professional organisation - Iranian Graphic Design Network - and two corporate members - INSPIRIT International Communications and Beijing Kingee Culture Development - have joined Icograda. Newly admitted to the Icograda Education Network are Jilin College of the Arts, Kingston University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and the School of Visual Arts.

    Singapore - The deadline for the 2011 President's Design Award, Singapore's highest design accolade, has been extended until 24 May 2011. Into its sixth year, the President's Design Award has honoured 18 designers and 37 designs across different design disciplines and has brought those designers prestige and recognition.
