    Toronto (Canada) - On Saturday 23 July 2011 one of Canada’s design pioneers died in Toronto. He had been in ill health for a little over a year. In 1956, while working with Howarth & Smith in Toronto as a graphic designer, John became the first secretary of the Society of Typographic Designers of Canada. In 1959 he initiated the Montréal group of the TDC when he opened the Cooper & Beatty office in that city.

    Melbourne (Australia) - Inspired by and in collaboration with the Design Factory at Aalto University in Helsinki, Swinburne University of Technology is set to house its own Design Factory beginning August 2011. The 'living lab' will see teams of business, design, engineering and information technology students work on major, industry-sponsored projects.

    Vienna (Austria) - FH St. Poelten University of Applied Sciences (FHSTP) in Austria will offer a new distance-learning Masters course in Traffic and Transport Information Design. The five-semester-course has been developed in close cooperation with the International Institute for Information Design (IIID) and is operated under the auspices of UNESCO.

    Tokyo (Japan) - On 9 July 2011, Masuteru Aoba lost his fight with cancer. He was a lifetime Icograda Friend, having been part of the original group of Japanese designers to launch this network in 1991. In 2003, his poster 'Clarity' was one of the four official posters for Visualogue, the 2003 Icograda World Design Congress in Nagoya, Japan.

    Toronto (Canada) - The Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD) recently announced the recipients of their 2011 Student Awards. Selected by a jury of 35 award-winning creative professionals from the province of Ontario, sixteen $1000 Awards, sponsored by industry leaders, were distributed in recognition of the recipients' outstanding achievements in all areas of graphic design.

    Melbourne (Australia) - David Lancashire presents a retrospective of collected original works by the late lettering artist Godfrey (Geoff) Fawcett. Offering a rare insight into the lost craft of hand lettering, this show features a selection of the words, graphics and studio materials of one of the last commercial lettering artists who worked entirely by hand.

    Ahmedabad (India) - The India Design Council announced the winning entry, produced by Vasant Mehar, for the India Design Mark competition. The 'I-Mark' is modelled after the G Mark, awarded to winners of the Good Design Award hosted by the Japanese Institute of Design Promotion (JDP).

    London (United Kingdom) - Following on from the business interest focused around the meeting of Premier Wen Jiabao with Prime Minister David Cameron earlier this month the Chartered Society of Designers (CSD) has announced a major collaboration which will see membership of the Society made available to designers throughout mainland China, Taiwan, Macao and Hong Kong.
