Ideas that live in people's minds are destined to remain precisely that - ideas. But ideas that are put down on paper make the inspired leap from being a figment of the imagination to becoming catalysts that change people's lives, their communities and the world they live in.

As the world's leading producer of coated fine paper, Sappi believes in the power of ideas on paper. It is a notion that we clearly share with the people who use our products to bring their ideas to life: graphic designers. Through our close interaction with designers all over the world we were inspired by their desire and willingness to use their talents to create a better world.

This realisation became a catalyst for us, leading to the establishment of the Sappi Ideas that Matter initiative in 1999. Each year, we invite designers to create printed communication campaigns for causes that they believe in and would like to support. A selection panel in each market, comprising design industry luminaries, is invited to consider the merits of this work, both from a design perspective and its potential power to generate a response from the public.

For those that stand up to the panel's scrutiny, the reward is a share of the USD $1 million that Sappi makes available every year. Grants vary in size depending on the scope of the campaigns, with the money being used to produce the campaign as specified by the designers.

The program
Ideas that Matter is an initiative that was launched world-wide by Sappi in 1999 to provide substantial grants that enable the implementation of creative ideas designed to support social and environmental causes.

Sappi invites graphic designers from Europe, North America and Southern Africa, to create printed communication campaigns for causes they want to support.

Sappi makes USD $1 million available for successful applicants around the world to realise their creative concepts and campaigns.

The philosophy
As the world's leading producer of coated fine paper, Sappi has a long tradition of supporting graphic designers who share a belief in the power of ideas on paper. With the Ideas that Matter program we hope to inspire designers to produce more and better communications for the benefit of society.

The rationale

Our initiative is a way to assist them to make a difference by providing them with the financial support they need to implement their Ideas that Matter.
