AIAP DESIGN PER International Graphic Design Week - Visible Cultures
ico-D is pleased to endorse The Italian Association of Visual Communication Design AIAP DESIGN PER, International Graphic Design Week Visible Cultures Conference to be held 23 September - 1 October 2017 in Rome, Italy.
AIAP DESIGN PER Conference
Every year since 2003 Aiap has organised and promoted a major event named AIAP DESIGN PER since 2009. This name—Design FOR—refers to the variety of areas in which design is involved: design FOR culture, FOR information, FOR society, FOR territorial identity, FOR sustainability.
This Design Week offers students, designers, researchers and teachers as well a rich programme revolving around a wide-ranging and theme that takes the form of workshops, exhibitions, round tables, talks, seminars, open studios, and collateral events.
The 2017 edition of AIAP DESIGN PER explores the topic of Visible Cultures, and will take place in Rome in September, on the prestigious premises of Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, overlooking the Trevi Fountain.
"Visible Cultures" refers to the physical and virtual spaces generated by the layers of history and the piling up of meaning and projects. These become ideal places to read and interpret—in an uninterrupted dialectic system—the memories, tales, paths and future scenarios of the territories of those who live in them and of their modes of communication.
If the "invisible cities" were imaginary, evocative places and metaphors for reality, the "visible cities" and their cultures are more and more at risk of becoming invisible. Tangible, concrete spaces are frequently fragile, permeable territories in which communication is paramount.
It is visual communication design that thus becomes the tool to investigate visible cultures, acting as connective tissue to hold together the multiple, divergent spaces of a territory, giving it a voice and an image, creating and enhancing local identities and resources, services, institutions, companies, and re-establishing the central role of the designer as the one who can generate development and contribute to improving the quality of life.
It is a role that needs re-thinking and re-positioning in the light of a deep, continuous transformation of the discipline as well as of the profession and its related feelds. It is a role that is capable of creating relationships and interacting with clients, crafts and industrial systems, end users and targets, as in the 1970s, with what became known in Italy as “graphics of public utility”—a movement which gave shape to models of visual language between the public and private sectors in a democratic, dialogue-based process which cannot be stopped but equally requires a deep re-thinking and re-positioning.
