Since 2007, the European Design Awards gathers an annual jury consisting of publishers, journalists, editors and academics, to evaluate and acknowledge the best examples of communication design in Europe from participants throughout the continent.

The main objectives of the ED-Project are:
- To celebrate European design with all its regional distinctive elements as well as its common grounds.
- To facilitate European designers to meet, benchmark, be inspired and build networks.
- To promote and raise standards for communication design throughout Europe.
- To properly honour and award people who invest their passion in design
- To create a directory of European communication design excellence, where design buyers from around the world will refer to in search of collaborators.

The competition is open to Europe-based communication design agencies, studios and freelancers. All participants are asked to register on the awards' website at www.europeandesign.org.

2017 ED Awards Jury

John Walters (UK)

John L. Walters is the editor and co-owner (with Simon Esterson) of Eye, the international review of graphic design. He was a musician and record producer before moving into publishing with Unknown Public in the 1990s. Outside Eye, Walters has written for The Guardian, Port, Boat and London Jazz News, and he is writing a book about Alan Kitching.

He has co-curated and programmed many Eye events, including the ‘Critical Tensions’ conference, several ‘archive nights’ (in London, New York and Amsterdam) plus Eye’s regular ‘Type Tuesdays’ at St Bride Library. He is a Visiting Fellow of the University of the Arts London and a founding juror of the European Design Awards. 



Thierry Hausermann (Switzerland)

Now based in Morges/Lausanne, Switzerland, Thierry Hausermann followed a one year program at ESAA (école supérieure d’arts appliqués) in Vevey, Switzerland, and then studied graphic design at ERACOM (école romande d’arts et communication) in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he graduated in 1986. He also pursued a course of studies at the Academy of Arts of San Francisco for 1 year in 1997. Besides being a graphic designer, he is also an editor, a writer and a project manager.

He founded IDPURE magazine in 2004 and his motivation since then is to discover new talents and explore the possibilities of presenting them in IDPURE



Kristina Ketola Bore (Norway)

She is a design critic and educator based in Oslo, Norway. She holds an MA in Design Writing Criticism from the London College of Communication. Since graduation she has contributed to magazines nationally and internationally on the subjects of art, architecture and design. Her work investigates the role of design as a cultural signifier, its various methods of narration, and how they can become policies in the personal, corporate and public realms.

Recently she co-curated Kunsthall Stavanger's 150th anniversary exhibition, Facts, Stories and Anecdotes, organised the international seminar series, The Forms of Politics, and co-founded The Ventriloquist Summerschool.

Through her publishing house Particular Facts, she investigates through writing, editing, curating and exhibiting projects about art history and the typographic history of Norway.

She's a lecturer in graphic design history and theory at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and is also a guest lecturer and external examiner at the Estonian Academy of the Arts.



Davide Fornari (Italy)

Davide Fornari holds a PhD in Design Sciences from University Iuav of Venice, and is a tenured teacher researcher at Lugano’s Laboratory of visual culture of SUPSI, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, where he teaches History of graphic design and typography.

He is a member of the permanent observatory of the Italian Design Association ADI, and co-editor of the magazine "Progetto grafico". He was a member of the Swiss Institute in Rome for the academic year 2014–2015.

He coordinated with Serena Cangiano the project Re-programmed Art devoted to kinetic and programmed art (2013–2015), and edited the book Mapping Graphic Design History in Switzerland with Robert Lzicar (Triest Verlag, Zurich 2016).



Camilla Buch (Sweden)

Camilla Buch is a design journalist based in Stockholm, Sweden. She has written about graphic design and communication for a range of different clients for several years. In 2007 she joined the Swedish design magazine CAP&Design as a freelancer and in early 2016 she became editor-in-chief. 

She has studied both economics and journalism at Stockholm University. She graduated in 2009.



Peter Bankov (Russia)

Peter Bankov was born in 1969. He graduated from the Minsk Art College in 1988 and the Moscow State Polygraph Institute in 1993. In 1996 he published [kAk) magazine, which has grown to be one of the key points of reference for the Russian graphic design scene. He is also the founder and creative director of Design Depot.

For his work in the fields of design and advertising he has received numerous awards on a national and international scale.



Floor van Essen (Netherlands)

She is editor and communications manager of Dude, Dutch Designers Magazine, which is published by BNO. She studied marketing, communication and concept development (strategy and copy writing), and started her career in 2006 in the advertising industry. She is responsible for public relations and communication of BNO. Her tasks include, sponsoring and communications, including social media, all websites, newsmails and the magazine Dude.



Bettina Schulz (Germany)

She has been editor-in-chief of the international journal novum - World of Graphic Design since 2001. She joined the editorial staff of the magazine in 1994. Mrs Schulz also works as a freelance writer and editor for national and international magazines and for a range of clients in different sectors. Bettina Schulz already serves on a number of design juries (e.g. red dot communication design award, MfG competition of the Bundesverband Druck, Monaco de Luxe Packaging Award, Canon Pro Fashion Award, Adobe Photoshop Award and the twice-yearly diploma awards presentation at the U5 Academy) and is co-founder of the “Creative Paper Conference” in Munich.



Eduardo Bravo (Spain)

Although he holds a law degree, Eduardo's professional career has been developed for more than 15 years in the journalism field, mostly in areas related with creativity, advertising, illustration and graphic design. His articles can be read in Visual, Yorokobu, Líbero, among other magazines. He also writes short comics for TMEO and collaborates as proof reader and print manager with Autsaider Cómics, publisher company that has released in Spain the works of Kaz, Benjamin Marra, Furillo, José Tomas or Herr Seele & Kamagurka among others. 



Halla Helgadóttir (Iceland)

Managing Director of the Iceland Design Centre with an extensive experience as an art director and a creative administrator. Educated as a graphic designer, Halla worked in the advertising industry for over 20 years running her own company, and hence has a very good insight into the process of the work of designers as well as close contact with the business sector. She has focused on work demanding high standards of design, creativity and quality of solutions as well as rigorous work methodology and economic efficiency. Halla has given lectures and workshops on graphic design and design thinking. In her role as managing director of the Iceland Design Centre Halla has acquired knowledge and experience of working with different professions within design and architecture, the creative industry in general as well as working with the public sector. In her work as a designer Halla has acquired numeous awards and acknowledgements.

Category winners will receive ED Awards.
Student category winner will be awarded with an all-paid trip to the ED Awards Ceremony, access to all ED events and 1000 Euros
