ico-D is pleased to endorse the 2016 edition of the Open Design Cape Town Festival: one the most dynamic and diverse design-focused festivals on the Cape Town calendar, taking place for 12 days in various venues city-wide.
Now in its fourth year, the Open Design Cape Town Festival happening from 10-21 August features two key programme components: a core events programme at Cape Town City Hall, from 10-16 August and a broader city-wide programme from 17-21 August.
Innovation, education and community are the building blocks of a sustainable, inclusive, prosperous society. Design is the unifying thread that links solutions to a better future world. The Open Design Cape Town Festival brings these concepts together, showcasing the role of design and innovation in solving problems and improving lives. Some of its key objectives are: to foster design-literate, active and responsive citizens and socially aware consumers; to promote South African innovation and creativity as a response to shared global challenges, and to show that design is for all communities, not just the elite.
The programme is curated to feature events that are relevant for people from all walks of life that are interested in or simply curious about design, from multi-disciplinary design professionals; to students, learners, educators and parents.
Among others, events comprise talks about design in various sectors: conferences that present innovation in business; exhibitions that showcase design and innovation as a career choice; and open studio tours that offer a behind-the-scenes look at the work of designers, innovators and entrepreneurs. Some of the festival highlights include the opening and closing parties on 10 and 20 August respectively; the Designing Careers Education Programme and exhibition for high school learners on every weekday; as well as a Designing Careers Tertiary Open Day on 13 August. Most of the Open Design Cape Town Festival events are free to enter, while others are ticketed for particular audiences.
