Red Thread - Navigating the labyrinth of contemporary communication design

25 September 2013
This exhibition and catalogue focuses on the communication design program at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, which traces its roots back to the late 1960s.  In 2013, the program is offered by a fully-fledged university and embraces the considerable breadth and complexity of contemporary visual communications.
In supporting the needs of industry and seeking to advance its stakes, an Industry Placement program and Honours year have long formed an integrated unit within the broader curriculum of Swinburne’s four-year communication design degree. Red Thread provides an insight into the nature and purpose of these two crucial components of the program. Essays by current staff in the catalogue address some of the program’s key emphases. Interviews with recent graduates reflect on the experience of these two years of the program and their role supporting graduates’ transition to industry. The exhibition features their work.
The key to the exhibition are the visuals that represent examples of the selected designers.
