Individuals supporting the objectives of the Council and its development form part of the greater ico-D community, under the rubric of "Friends". These are personal relationships that enrich the interaction between the Council's many regions and areas of involvement.
The ico-D Friend classification originated in 1991 with seed donations contributed by 68 founders from Japan. Founder Friends have been honoured as Lifetime Friends.
These generous individuals have been given special certificates attesting to their contributions.

- Lifetime Friends is an honorific title granted by the organisation to individuals who have made important contributions to the Council’s activities and advancement.
Individuals who support the Council’s objectives and activities can make an annual contribution to its development and become Friends of ico-D. To be considered a Friend, it is required that the individual demonstrates interest in design practice, advocacy, research and/or education, as well as ico-D’s mission and vision; and supports ico-D’s international Best Practices.
Benefits and Commitment
Each Friend of ico-D receives:
- A personalized profile on the Friend directory ico-D website page.
- Communications about ico-D's activities and events.
- Special offers and preferential rates for events, products and other services.
- An invitation to attend the biannual ico-D General Assembly as an Observer.
- An opportunity to contribute to projects and initiatives.
The ico-D Friend contribution amount is established by the Executive Board and ratified at the biennial General Assembly.
Friend contribution amounts are determined for each of the three country zones, and are based on per capita (P/C) Gross National Income (GNI) index, as published by the World Bank. Zone classifications and annual adjustments reflect data obtained from the World Bank as of 1 July of each year. While the zones are updated annually, the fees will be adjusted by the Secretariat every two years (non-GA years). The 2016 rates for each Zone are:
Zone A - CAD$ 120.00
Zone B - CAD$ 90.00
Zone C - CAD$ 60.00
