The Design discipline at the School takes a sustainable and humanistic approach which also aims to expand the scope of traditional design into the sociotechnical realms.  The three conceptual pillars constitute: (a) Design Social - collaborative design with communities and the public sectors to improve living conditions through critical, systemic and participatory approaches; (b) Design Economies - entrepreneurial design that enhances service innovation and value creation in the private sector; and (c) Design Making - human-centered and hands-on design investigations in labs and with communities, in the practices of making and prototyping via socio-technical means.  They are identified as the three flagship themes to consolidate the research focus and emerging pedagogies in the School.


The School is now inviting applications from outstanding candidates with expertise and experience in the areas relevant to the strategic focuses of the School.  Priority will be given to candidates with research expertise and track record in integrating human-centred design with emerging sociotechnical systems under specific entrepreneurial, community and service contexts.


The appointee will be required to (a) provide leadership in all aspects of academic activities, including research, teaching and service in the School; (b) conduct innovative and impactful research that leads to publications in top-tier refereed journals and knowledge transfer; (c) engage in promoting research collaboration, securing external research grant, improving research output and increasing the level of consultancies; (d) facilitate the School in increasing its international visibility, strengthen its international connections, as well as developing international academic and industrial networks for research collaboration and activities for knowledge transfer; (e) teach and contribute to curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and supervise research students; and (f) contribute to departmental administration and management.


Applicants should have (a) a relevant PhD degree in related disciplines, plus substantial years of experience in teaching and research with significant achievements; (b) a substantial record and reputation as an accomplished academic with significant contribution to curriculum development/review or teaching and learning processes; (c) a distinguished international reputation and a well-established track record in research, including refereed publications, competitive external grants and postgraduate supervision, with significant contributions to and impact on the related fields; (d) strong commitment to developing the relevant discipline to the highest standard of excellence; (e) demonstrated capability of academic management and leadership; and (f) a strong network with international researchers to contribute to the development of high-level research collaborations between the School and reputable organizations.
