The Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) Releases Internship Reference Guide to Assist Students and Studios

In consultation with the Canadian Intern Association, the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC®) has released the “GDC Internship Reference Guide” developed to help guide design students, studios and agencies. This Guide helps dispel common myths surrounding the internship practice, delivers a national perspective, and provides practical information and useful references.

This Guide helps dispel common myths surrounding the internship practice, delivers a national perspective, and provides practical information and useful references.

“Given the pervasiveness of the practice in our industry, it was critically important that the GDC use it’s national influence to help raise awareness of acceptable internship practices in Canada,” said Melanie MacDonald, GDC Executive Director.

Adrian Jean CGD, GDC National President elaborated, “An internship is a valuable
component to a graphic and communication design education. Many successful designers point to their own internship as a turning point in their careers. Those designers now want to give back and provide the next generation that same benefit. These designers and agencies should be supported and encouraged in doing so. Internships can provide positive benefits for BOTH the participant AND provider IF the program is developed appropriately and all parties are aware of their rights and responsibilities prior to engagement. The GDC’s Internship Reference Guide is an invaluable tool for both parties”.

For students, internships offer real-world exposure to the business of design and the pace of the marketplace as well as hands-on experience applying strategic thinking and using the tools and techniques of their trade.

For studios and agencies, interns can bring vitality to the workplace and fresh perspectives in creative problem solving. Internships offer studios and agencies opportunities to give back to the profession and the community. Interns themselves can also prove to be a high quality source of potential talent to draw upon once they complete their formal education and enter the workforce.

The GDC sees internships as a useful part of a designer’s education and path to
professional practice.
