Seoul (Korea) - The first TypoJanchi will be held at Seoul Arts Center Design Gallery to introduce the new stream of typography in the world.
Seoul (Korea) - The first TypoJanchi will be held at Seoul Arts Center Design Gallery for 50 days starting from October 16, 2001 through December 5, 2001. It will be held every 2 years and introduce the new stream of typography in the world. 'Janchi' is a Korean word meaning 'open festival.' As a festival which gathers excellent typography works in the world in a single place, Seoul will be reborn as a city of typography.

Ahn Sang-Soo, Chairman: "The 1st TypoJanchi: seoul typography biennale will be a space of "neo imagination." In this place, we dream of a new culture of typography. 'neo imagination', the theme of the 1st TypoJanchi attempts to go beyond the imagination of the 20th century which dreamed about excessive technological revolution, depended on mathematical deductive method, and made linear theory."

TypoJanchi will highlight the virtues of 'concern and sharing' which are the essence of communication. At the same time, we're going to examine 'concern and sharing' as found in the ideas underlying the invention of hangul, the youngest alphabet in the world. In addition, we'll review the stream of typography that is extending its domain beyond mere character design.

The members of organizing committee selected the designers participating in the 1st TypoJanchi through a co-curating system. For the main exhibition, they selected artists who have stimulated the world design culture. In addition, they invited five great designers to be part of a special exhibition to commemorate the foundation of TypoJanchi. They are also planning to hold an international design forum, which will provide an arena to discuss the design culture of the 21st century.

The 1st TypoJanchi is sponsored by Korean Ministry of Culture & Tourism, and endorsed by icograda, ISTD, and IIID.

Organizing Committee: Ahn, Sang-Soo, Katsumi Asaba, Neville Brody, Chung, Byoung-Kyoo, Esther Liu, Helmut Schmid, Guy Schockaert, Sung, Wan-Kyung.
