New York (United States) - DESIGN 21 and UNESCO have announced the judges for the Languages Matter! poster competition, an Icograda endorsed competition. Members of the DESIGN 21 network have until 19 January 2009 to submit their poster designs celebrating International Mother Language Day, coming up on 21 February 2009.

In November 1999, the General Conference of UNESCO proclaimed 21 February the International Mother Language Day, to promote linguistic diversity and multilingualism.

In 2007, UNESCO was chosen as the lead for the 2008 'The International Year of Languages'. Their subsequent awareness-raising campaign, whose slogan is "languages matter", aims to emphasise the importance of a wide variety of topics including linguistic and cultural diversity, literacy and mother-tongue-based education.

DESIGN 21's judges for the Languages Matter! poster competition, who will be selecting the "judge's picks", are:
  • Jacques Lange (South Africa) Partner and creative director, Bluprint Design, Design Editor of DESIGN> magazine and Past President (2007-2009) Icograda.
  • Omar Vulpinari (Republic of San Marino) Creative Director of the Visual Communication Department at Fabrica, and Vice President of Icograda.

UNESCO's judges, who will be picking the overall winner, are:
  • Mr Daniel Prado - Director of Terminology and Language Industries.
  • Mr Adama Samassékou - Secretary General of African Academy of Languages.

These judges will be looking for the ability to graphically and visually transform the "languages matter" message in a convincing and easy to understand way.
