ico-D is pleased to endorse the Joseph Binder Award 2018, an international competition with a focus on graphic design and illustration first launched by Member designaustria in 1996.
»Colour and form are inseparable« – the motto of this year’s call for entries is borrowed from one of Joseph Binder’s quotes, which inspired the graphic designers of the studio Bruch–Idee&Form from Graz in their design for the visual appearance of JBA18.

The Joseph Binder Award (JBA) is an international competition with a focus on graphic design and illustration and was first launched in 1996 by designaustria, the interest organization and knowledge centre for design in Austria. It is named after one of the most outstanding graphic designers and illustrators active in Austria between the two World Wars, who subsequently also revolutionized visual communication in the United States.
Joseph Binder’s motto was:
»In design, everything has a function. Design has a representational function. Design has a communicational function. Design has a motivational function.«
Graphic designers, illustrators, advertising agencies and students from all over the world are invited to enter their works realized in 2016 and after by 28 February (early bird) or 15 April 2018.
The submissions will be judged in thirteen categories: Corporate Design, Communication Design, Information Design, Type Design, Poster Design, Editorial Design, Packaging Design, Screen Design, Book Illustration, Media Illustration, Commercial Illustration, Illustration in Miscellaneous Applications and Design Fiction (unpublished works, independent/non-commercial projects, unrealised concepts, student projects, etc. in all disciplines).
