ico-D is pleased to endorse the The Power of Illustration—A Legacy for the Future, an exhibition organised by the University of South Australia that runs from 3 November until 1 December 2017.
This exhibition celebrates the contribution and legacy of the alumni and staff of the University of South Australia to the practice of Illustration, and is co-curated by Rita Siow and David Blaiklock from the University’s School of Art, Architecture and Design.
About the exhibition
Spanning forty years, it documents the diverse impact of their work on innovation, culture and commerce—demonstrating the connection between illustration teaching and practice on a national and international scale—from publishing, label and packaging, body art and animation to stage installations, branding, environmental design and motion graphics.
In 2018, the University of South Australia will launch Australia’s first Illustration and Animation degree programme, building on the expertise and knowledge of its legacy.
Illustration is often the silent ingredient in the business of design and advertising because its economic and social impact is not readily measured. Yet, we can see that the practice of illustration is highly visible and evident in the environments we live, the supermarkets we shop, the books we read, the movies we see, the merchandise we wear and the wines we enjoy…
The exhibition will bring into focus, ways in which illustration can provide the medium, the voice and the lens for subjects and messaging that other communication channels are not able to explore. It will also raise awareness of the role, influence and impact of illustration on societal beliefs, customs and behavior and its important contribution to the design and branding of identities, products and services.
