Contemporary African Design

Zagreb (Croatia) - Contemporary African Design: an exhibition of African design in Zagreb, organised by ULUPUH in cooperation with the Dyalli association, will be held in Zagreb for the fifth time during the African week 22-27 of May 2013. Dyalli is an association for the promotion of African culture in Croatia. The African week manifestation is endorsed by Mr. Ivo Josipovic, the President of Croatia, and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture. M. Sc. Sanja Rocco, designer, Icograda Liason, is the author of the concept, of choosing designers from different countries in Africa.

Works from different fields of design, mostly from the field of visual communication (communication design, fashion, and product design) will be highlighted, with the intention of promoting good examples of contemporary design practice in Africa. Works from a new generation of African communication designers whose work has been inspired by African culture will be chosen for the exhibition

The Selection Committee is made up of: Jacques Lange (former Icograda President, Editor of www.designmagazine.co), Mohamed Jogie (former Icograda Vice President), and Sanja Rocco. Additionally, ZIVA - a design school in Zimbabwe, run by Saki Mafundikwa, designer, will be presented as a successfull private initiative for education in Africa.

ULUPUH, the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2000. The association, the members of which are renowned Croatian artists, is comprised of seventeen different sections: ceramics, graphic design, photography, industrial design, textile design, fashion design, theatre and film, jewellery design, architecture, horticulture, applied painting, caricature and animated films, as well as of the art critics, restauration and multimedial sections.
