Graphex 2010 Awards Gala

From now until 25 January 2010, Graphex invites communication designers, web designers, typographers, photographers, illustrators, art directors, ad agencies, printers, writers and clients from across Canada to submit their best published cultural, social and business communications - in all mediums.

About the awards

Graphex is Canada's biennial National design awards. An Icograda-endorsed event, Graphex has been celebrating the best of visual communications in Canada since 1977 and in 2010 the winning entries will reflect the best work from Canada's communication design professionals over the past two years.

Presented by the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada, the primary goal of Graphex is to promote the value of design to the Canadian public and business community at large, to celebrate the best in the industry and to create an archive of Canadian design for future generations. Good Design is Good Business. This is your opportunity to see yourself among the best.

Eligibility

As part of the GDC's mandate to create an ongoing archive of Canadian design, Graphex 2010 is a national event - open to all Canadians, with discounts given to professional members of design associations such as GDC, RGD Ontario (Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario) and SGDQ (Société des Designers Graphiques du Québec).

To be eligible, all entries must be accompanied by the design criteria stating the challenges or requirements of the project and the rationale for the design solution. Please do not describe the entry. Entries must be accompanied by Form A, fees, design criteria and rationale.

Criteria

Work must be published in or for use in Canada between November 2007 and December 2009. Student work is not permitted.

Categories

There are 17 categories for this year's competition. Entries that are not submitted under the proper category may be disqualified.

Entries that fit in more than one category may be submitted multiple times. There is no limit to the number of entries.

The categories are:
  1. Advertising (print, billboards, newspaper, transit shelters, etc.)
  2. Annual reports (print or digital)
  3. Editorial/Magazine (magazine cover, magazine spreads or total format)
  4. Books (book cover or total format)
  5. Corporate literature (Catalogues, manuals, brochures)
  6. Multimedia (motion graphics, game design, sales presentation, kiosk, educational program)
  7. Corporate Identity (max. 3 pieces: Logo and single application, i.e. logo, stationery and/or signage)
  8. Integrated Brand Program (5 or more pieces that communicate the brand story)
  9. Web Design (websites, microsites and other web-based applications)
  10. Packaging (consumer goods, boxes, labels, CDs, etc)
  11. Posters
  12. Self promotion (printed or digital)
  13. Social Cause (social change, pro-bono work, non-for-profit, sustainable practices, etc.)
  14. Signage and Environmental Design (vehicle graphics, wayfinding, interiors, trade show booths, banners, kiosks, POS, POP for retail and civic purposes)
  15. Typography (original typeface design)
  16. Other (style guides, menus, stamps, complex promos, gifts, wearables, calendars, 3D promos, invitations, calendars etc.)

Jury

For each annual competition, Graphex hosts a jury of international judges hand selected from a mix of experienced designers, writers, marketers and clients. This year's jury is composed of:

Announcement results

Entries will be judged between 6-7 February and selected finalists notified by email on or before mid-March. Winners be announced on 29 April at a special event held at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre as part of the closing ceremonies of Design Currency: Icograda Design Week in Vancouver.

Winners of each Graphex competition are documented online in addition to a printed catalogue.

At the conclusion of the competition phase, a traveling exhibit of the winners tours Canada showcasing the work to the public.

Submission

Graphex is processing all submissions online for the first time. In this process, you will create your account and create an entry for each piece to submit. Once you have paid, you will get a printed label to include when you send samples pieces into be judged.
