Icograda President, 1987-1989 Niko served on the Icograda board from 1983 until 1991. 1969-1991, Founding partner of what is now Eden Design, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. 1991, Lives and lectures in Melbourne, Australia. 1995, Founding partner of Ography, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, practising graphic design. Everything in the Netherlands is made by people, designed if you like, including the landscape. Every tree is planted and planned to be planted. Not so in Australia. This is the main source of cultural difference between the two countries. Just planning and perseverance was the idea. Add to this a fierce sense of personal independence and a head for experimenting on about everything practical and pragmatic. A place made by people to suit great diversity: that is the Netherlands! Now living and practising design in easy going Melbourne all this is quite different. The environment is vast, unknown, beautifull and amazingly varied. Inspirational . . , to do what? People do not make Australia. The land makes the people. The best is still to come.

Tuuli Sauren, Creative and Art Director, is the founder of INSPIRIT International Communications and its Sustainable Design and Promotion Group. “There isn't anything I can’t do, if I really want to” has been her motto throughout her life. Determination to reach the goal and finding new solutions to get there is her modus operendi. She started her career at McCann-Erickson in Helsinki, Finland as an assistant to art director, quickly climbing the ladder to become one of the most sought-after art directors. During the agency years her clients included Coca-Cola, Shell, and Sportia, as well as many clients in the fashion industry and business-to-business sector . Restless in the traditional hierarchical style agency, with too many layers between her and the client, Tuuli wanted to make a change from being employed to being an independent Art and Creative Director. After working with other agencies, Tuuli broke out on her own and became a Freelance Creative in Holland, including work with and with J. Walter Thompson. In the early 90s she moved to Brussels and established her own freelance brand, INSPIRIT International Advertising. She continued her work as an art director and designer for clients including the European Free Trade Association, EFTA Court, Global Reporting Initiative, World Health Organization, International Catholic Migration Commission, International Fund for Agricultural Development, Boole & Babbage Europe and many other international organizations. INSPIRIT International Communications was born in 2005. Its 'There is a solution to everything’, motto helped attract and retain long-lasting client relationships. Tuuli is a Juror at ico-D (International Council of Design) Sustainability Standard and a Board Member of the Union Design of Belgium. In Spring 2015 she launched Sustainable Designers Initiative (SDI), an initiative of INSPIRIT International Communication, Sustainable Design and Promotion Group to help young design graduates make their mark on the industry. She also has a passion for horses and human intellects.

Albert Ng has had an illustrious career in graphic design. One of Canada’s best-known designers, he led a ten-year campaign for the professional accreditation of graphic designers in Ontario. The resulting legislation caused him to become known as the “father of graphic design accreditation.” Mr Ng founded the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario. He helped develop clearly defined standards of professional practice, quality post-secondary education programs, and a greater understanding of the important role of graphic design in business and economic success. His accreditation model was a first in North America, second world-wide, and his contributions to design have helped Ontario’s graphic designers be globally competitive.

— From the Order of Ontario Citation investiture ceremony
   24 January 2008

Albert Ng, a Canadian widely regarded as the father of graphic design accreditation in North America, was one of 27 recipients recently invested
in the Order of Ontario by the Honourable David Onley, Lieutenant
Governor of Ontario.

The Order of Ontario, the province’s highest and most prestigious honour, is awarded to Ontarians for outstanding achievement and excellence in any field. The men and women invested in The Order are representative of the best of Ontario’s caring and diverse society and stand as shining examples for us all. Their lives have benefited society in Ontario and elsewhere.

Albert Ng is indeed such a remarkable and outstanding individual. For more
than two decades he devoted himself to raising the standards and the profile
of Canada’s graphic design profession. What has transpired from his profound commitment to this design discipline, together with his astute leadership
and unwavering vision, is a lasting gift of innovative collaboration and
outstanding achievement.

Albert’s aspirations for the profession came to fruition only after many years of dedicated work. He saw what the profession lacked and set out to remedy the situation, even when told the challenges would be impossible to overcome. Undeterred, he persisted in his pursuit of professional recognition and convinced other designers to lend their support to his accreditation plan. “Accreditation would be for our next generation of designers and students,” he said (and
still says).

Of the many successes stemming from accreditation, Albert counts creating the professional self-governing body for Ontario’s graphic designers, creating the Examination Board for Registered Graphic Designers, and elevating Ontario’s professional and graphic design-education standards as his most rewarding achievements. These were milestones indeed and they have forever changed the outlook for Canadian graphic design.

With accreditation Albert has enhanced the reputation of Canadian designers on an international level. He is quick to recall an early comment from one well-known American designer, “I am inspired and impressed by the thoughtful and methodical work that Canadian designers are doing to make professional accreditation a reality. It seems like every time U.S. designers get together to discuss the subject, it deteriorates into a shouting match!” It’s not just the Americans who have been watching the effects of accreditation; several Asian governments and many graphic design organizations, and even the Queensland government of Australia, have taken notice and have approached Albert for advice and information about his accreditation projects.

Accreditation has opened the door for changes in the education of Ontario’s graphic designers too. New post-graduate design degree programs are being established and one and two-year post-secondary design programs have been eliminated, with three or four year applied degrees or honours bachelor degrees becoming the norm.

Albert’s contributions to Canadian graphic design are well-known. He was the founding president of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario, a former vice-president of Icograda, and former president of the Ontario chapter of the GDC. He is also the first Canadian designer to be honoured as a Fellow of both the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) and the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD Ontario). A former Association president recently commented that, “without Mr Ng’s initial vision for graphic design accreditation in Ontario there would be no RGD Ontario.”

Since 2005, I have worked in more than 25 countries—bridging cultures, language and timezones to use design for progressive change. From 2005-2012 I was Icograda's Managing Director. 15+ years as a practising designer took me through design studios, print shops, daily newspapers, publishing companies and the advertising industry. Along the way, I picked up a few creative accolades. Some for writing too. Passionate about community and volunteering. The Nova Scotia Nature Trust, YWCA Halifax, United Way and Oxfam have all been part of the mix. These days meetin.org is where I hang out. I am a CGD certified member of the Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC). Connected, always....

The Essay of My True Self It is the love for art and the impulse of creating value that makes me persist in the career of a designer. I think I am one of the designers standing in the design forefront of our country. With my partners, I manage the Top-point Brand Design Corporation , contributing to the development of many Chinese enterprises and dedicating to many foreign companies promotion in China. So I got many awards both in China and abroad. I have strong interest in the cosmic inventory, from the microcosmic cell world to the macroscopical mists of time. Just like a new born baby, I am curious about everything. I want to learn and know everything. Finally I turn myself to the career as a designer. I always think that how great the nature is. After a long initiative designing, the nature created the sky, the earth, human beings and objects. What more miraculous is that all these creation can get along orderly and harmoniously. By the initiative designing, the nature created such great human, whose brain can imagine a boundless world. Because of the need to communicate within themselves as well as with objects, human beings initiatively designed those impalpable substances, such as eye contact and language . So now you can see how fantastic the world is. The beautiful flower horn swims in the deep ocean; by releasing little bombycol, a female moth can attract all the male moths for miles around; with mitochondrion and DNA ,a single cell can give birth to a new life. So what time is on earth? Why time can go like water but never be a cycle? Or the time designed by natural is a cycle while life isn t? Why human beings are destined to grow up from babyhood, and then get older and older, at last leave the world? I always want to create works like nature s wisdom; and to get inspiration from nature to exceed my present visual level. I always think that my existing works are so limited in comparison with nature.
