ico-D was founded on 27 April 1963 in London (United Kingdom), as Icograda—the International Council of Graphic Design Associations.

  • Legacy

ico-D celebrates its 52 anniversary this year.

ico-D was founded on 27 April 1963 in London, as icograda, the International Council of Graphic Design Associations, by Peter Kneebone and Willy de Majo, who recognized the need to create meaningful international dialogue around the future trajectory of graphic design.

icograda became a non-profit, non-partisan, Member-based network of independent organisations and stakeholders working within the holistic, global scope of design.

In 2011 icograda was retitled The International Council of Communication Design as a means to reflect the expansion of the graphic design discipline into the age of new media.

At the historic 25 General Assembly in 2013, while celebrating 50 years of design advocacy, raising professional design standards, and facilitating international networks to thrive, the Council Members adopted a visionary strategy to become a multidisciplinary world design body.

The new strategy reflects the increasing dissolution of boundaries between disciplines, as new technologies and media have created multi-faceted demands on professional designers. Increasingly, professional designers are working within complex, globalized environments that required them to research outside of their field, and to synthesize entirely new concepts and solutions in order to engage people with their environment and community in potent ways.

At the same time, the new strategy is based on the conviction that ico-D will be better positioned and able to address the needs of specific disciplines and especially the fields of visual communications from which it sprung.

ico-D is the world's largest representative of the international community of professional designers. In 2015 ico-D’s new direction invests in a Member-driven agenda, a focus on needs of individual designers in-context, and on the creation of a Platform structure as an interface for design professionals, educators, thinkers, leaders and advocates to investigate common and cross-discipline issues.

Now more than ever, design is a critical medium for leadership and progressive change.
